NEW APPLICATIONS OF PROVEN TECHNIQUES: USING ULTRA-SENSITIVE QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES TO SPEED UP CARBON DATING AND LOWER COSTS

Artemis Analytics is a mass spectrometry spin-out from The University of Manchester.

Our core technologies were developed by University researchers whilst working at CERN, where they have been used to detect isotopes that are otherwise only produced in supernovae explosions.

In addition to our work on trace isotope detection, we are drawing on our understanding of quantum technology and laser techniques to develop a carbon dating analysis service with the potential to revolutionise this particular field. It is envisaged that the same basic techniques will also be extremely helpful to a range of related disciplines including forensics, artworks, identifying counterfeit wines and whisky.

Currently archaeologists are having to wait some months for their samples to be analysed, a timescale that can disrupt research programmes and cause frustration all round. With the analysis service we are developing, results will be provided in days rather than weeks or months.

Our plan is to focus initially on archaeological artefacts and then expand our services into related disciplines within a short timescale.

International recognition

The laser and mass spectrometry techniques that have been developed by The University of Manchester over the past twenty years have received numerous awards and continue to be at the forefront of international microanalysis.
